Cameroon Bridge of Hope Community was called upon to respond to a deeply heartbreaking situation that reminded us of the fragility of life and the importance of community support during moments of crisis.
We were introduced to Odette, a 23-year-old young woman whose life had already been marked by many challenges. She is an orphan, a single mother to a two-year-old child, and lives with epilepsy. Because of her condition, she depends largely on the care and support of her aunt.
On the day of the incident, her aunt had traveled and had arranged for a neighbor to assist with preparing meals. Due to the risks associated with epilepsy, Odette is normally discouraged from going near open flames or cooking by herself. Unfortunately, when the neighbor delayed, Odette made the difficult decision to cook for herself and her child.
While preparing the meal, tragedy struck. Odette suffered an epileptic seizure in the kitchen and fell, knocking over hot oil from the fire. The oil spilled onto her body while she was unconscious. By the time she regained awareness, the burns were severe and extremely painful.
She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Due to the severity of the burns on her hand, doctors had no choice but to perform an amputation in order to save her life.
By the time Cameroon Bridge of Hope Community was contacted, Odette’s family had already exhausted their financial resources trying to keep her alive and continue her treatment. Through our community network and live fundraising efforts, we mobilized support from people touched by her story. Together, we raised 500,000 FCFA to support her ongoing medical care and treatment.
Odette’s story is one of pain, resilience, and survival. It also reminds us that timely support can become a lifeline for someone facing their darkest moment.
Your donation can help provide emergency medical relief to vulnerable people like Odette. Give hope when it is needed most.
